Meeting RoHS2 Standards

Including Legacy Product Redesign

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) is a European Union directive restricting the use of specific substances considered hazardous to the environment in certain electronic and electrical equipment.

The directive restricts the use of the use of Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium, Polybrominated biphenyls and Polybrominated diphenyl ether in a wide variety of equipment. With the implementation of RoHS2 in January 2013, some product categories that were originally exempt from RoHS are now being phased into the directive.

These include medical devices, industrial instruments, and monitoring and control instruments. Relevant extension dates for RoHS 2 requirement compliance are: July 22, 2016: Extension to category 8 (In vitro diagnostic medical devices)July 22, 2017: Extension to category 9 (industrial monitoring and control instruments)July 23, 2019: Extension to all EEE except those explicitly excluded.

Garrett Technologies, Inc. has helped many of our clients by going back through the supply chain as far back as the raw materials providers to obtain the materials declarations and certificates of compliance, updating legacy products that have required a re-layout and a different part package, and revising PCBA Bills of Material and design files for RoHS compliance.

The RoHS directive is an important consideration for manufacturers. With the entire supply chain compliance documented, RoHS is a straightforward process and should not become an issue if regulators ask for compliance data.
